One by one they got rejected until John Woodruff heard their tape and thought they had a chance, he immediately flew to Brisbane to sign them to JWM, his record company. Their first self titled album was recorded in Sydney, Australia. Woodruff released the record to an independent label, Road show Music and in their first single, I Want You, was released in Sydney. The single went platnum and became the highest selling single in Australia for Their album was released on March 24, and debuted at number 1 on the national ARIA chart where it spent 19 weeks.

Their CD was number 9 on the top ten best selling albums list from Dec 29, to Jan 3, In late , there was media speculation that the band would break up due to Hayes starting his solo album project.
He announced that Jones was taking time off to work on a record label he had founded. They sent out demos to record labels around the world, and got only one bite — from legendary Aussie manager John Woodruff, who negotiated a number of savvy licensing deals that ensured the band would be a priority act in various markets around the globe.
By the end of the century, they were coming off the back of two number one albums and an exhausting world tour. The whole experience had affected them both differently. Hayes was born for stardom while Jones hated everything that came with it. They had completely different plans for the future. Savage Garden was over. Their split seemed premature to fans and industry alike.
